An Old Bristolians Westbury midweek XI beat Bristol Grammar School staff by five wickets on Wednesday night, as OBWCC and the school aim to reignite their connections.
A friendly, relaxed tone was set for the match before even a ball was bowled as OBWCC committee member and alleged all rounder Tom Harvey insisted on buying a pint shortly before the start time. Inevitably BGS Staff skipper Alex Goodland proceeded to win the toss and put OBWCC in the field, forcing Harvey to take his pint with him to point.
Thankfully for Tom, BGS found opening spells from Mike Jones and Craig Strachan tough to manage and quickly found themselves 14-2, in part thanks to a worldie catch from OBWCC President Phil Thorn low to his left at first slip.
Thorny then joined the bowling action himself, getting A Keen out stumped for 17, before OBWCC captain Arun Bondalapati decided to give the entire side a bowl including James Diamond, much to the disbelief of the rest of the team. Needless to say, he did not take a wicket.
From their 20 overs BGS set OBWCC 125 to win, captain Goodland top scoring with 25. Strachan the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-0-2-13.
OBWCC’s reply started well with some nice shots from keeper Adam Stenlake and Hithesh Srinivasan before Hithesh decided to miss a straight one.
Coming in at 3 Diamond was then even more generous, deciding to spoon his third ball to mid wicket for a duck.
Alongside Stenlake, Dan Langan, famously retired from Saturday fixtures, steadied the ship and left the result in little doubt with both retiring on 28 and 25 respectively.
That allowed Tom Harvey to come in and have some fun with ramps and reverse sweeps galore, before Ollie Harris arrogantly ended the game with a six.
T Biddle was the top bowler for BGS ending with 2.1-0-3-14, before a fantastic evening was rounded off by a signature curry from Nick behind the bar.
