Sunday 2nd XI Report 2009
Weather apart, 2009 was another good season for the Sunday 2nd XI. We won 9, lost only 4, finished 2nd in the league and gained promotion to Division 2. Sundays were more affected by the wet summer than Saturdays - 2 games were cancelled and a further three abandoned part way through.

We have a nucleus of senior Sunday-ony players, and a few twice-a-weekers, but Sunday also provides the best opportunity for youth players to have a go at senior cricket as many of them are committed to school cricket on Saturdays. This year the club didn't run an Under 17 team, due to lack of numbers, so for the few U17's that we do have this was their main chance to play for the club. In all fifteen youth players played for the team and most of the best performances of the season were provided by the youngsters.
The only ton of the season was scored by Felix Currell (100 not out) in his sole appearance, Olly Folland managed to run himself out on 98 and there was a maiden Senior half century for Tom Barrington. Olly Folland also turned in the best bowling performance, 4-4, Neel Khimji took 4 wickets on 3 occasions, and there were also 4 wicket hauls for Zaravar Singh and Tom Barrington. Neel was easily the highest wicket taker in the team with 18 at an average of 10.6. There was also a memorable wicket keeping performance from Ganesh who claimed seven victims in the home match against Barrow Gurney, including the top 5 batsmen.
... and Pete Lamb who arrived a little later
Division 3 generally provided a decent standard of cricket this year, but we are looking forward to the step up next season. We started with an excellent win in a close and high scoring match against Filton Wayfarers - the only match that Filton lost all year. Filton apart, most of the teams in the division were evenly matched there only being 6 points separating 3rd place from 9th place at the end of the season. Steve Marsh may beg to differ, but the matches were generally played in excellent spirit, without any of the nonsense that spoiled a couple of games in 2008.
A big thank you to Tom Counsell for running the bar after the home games and to Jackie and the other ladies who helped out with teas. Also many thanks to Alex Lee for entertaining the team with his umpiring decisions, his collection of unusual cricket bats and by arriving at grounds from unexpected angles.
